How well do we know the landscape around us? The streets, trees and buildings that are so familiar to us form a well-known image on our retina. But what happens when we see the world from above? What happens when we are able to fly like a bird over the world below us? But what happens when we see the world from above?
In Flyland, two dancers skim in an apparently free fall along the enchanting nature of the Wadden island of Terschelling, by which Middendorp makes the island come to life and shows us how insignificant man can be in relation to nature. With the aerial footage of Terschelling that Middendorp made with a self-built drone, he allows us to experience the island in a unique way.
The world the dancers enter symbolizes an alternative version of reality. The question that Middendorp examines with this is in what ways that alternate version of reality is less ‘real’ than the world we know and live in. In Flyland, he explores and pushes the borders of reality, with the help of a dreamy video projection and brings an emotional fantasy to life.
